Yellow flowers on garden dill?

Sunday Jul 11, 2010

First time doing dill in the garden. Very hot summer. My dill now looks like the dill in this picture: http://www.mckenzieseeds.com/productimages_large/101302.jpg I use dill in soups. Can I harvest my dill and use it, yellow flowers and all? Is it safe to eat? Can I put the yellow flower part in my soups? Does it taste just like the green leaves part that I harvested when the herb started growing?

I totally agree with susan n and I would like to add some background to this situation.

It is not unusual for Dill plants to develop a floral bloom as soon as the weather conditions turns hot.

The dill grows best in cold climates and should ideally be cultivated in areas with year round cool average temperatures. This of course is not the case since dill is cultivated globally which can cause the production of flower to be triggered, especially during a very hot weather spell as we are presently going through. Also, keep in min that an effect of such flowering is that the growth of new leaves is suppressed.

Your dill is bolting. Cut the flowers off and you will have better foliage.

You can use the flowers and seeds if you like. Crumble and smell the flowers first since they may not have as much flavor and fragrance.
