What plants to grow in warm climate?
Posted by pano | Under Herb Garden Friday Jan 20, 2012I have a 3 meter by 1 meter outdoor area attached to my kitchen, paved, and has restricted sun access because it is roofed and has a wooden panel that looks like this http://www.tradeindia.com/selloffer/2571690/Punched-Hole.html
Enough sunlight peaks through the grooves but the direct sunlight is limited to 2 hours a day max.
This is in a sea country in the Middle East, so it is hot and humid in summer, warm to slightly cool in the evenings in winter. It is winter now, and there is no humidity. Temp around 28 -23 C.
I want to turn this area into a herb and vegetable garden. What types of herbs and vegetables could I grow under the above conditions? (baring in mind the current season).
Many thanks,

you can plant chives, mint, rosemary etc. i think they are the best.
You may be able to grow some members of the mint family and radishes but almost everything needs more light than that. Try a ground cover like sweet woodruff or periwinkle. They can grow in dim light and are very hardy. If you can increase the light with reflectors you can try lavender, a very tough and heat resistant herb.
Parsley, Mint, chives and rosemary. Rosemary particularly is tough.
Coriander – put under shade cloth if it gets too hot. Basil likes hot weather and mostly is annual, however you can get a biannual.
You could also grow lettuce leaves, salad burnette, rocket.
Among your choices are winter- flowering viburnum, jasmine, honeysuckle or witch hazel, evergreen holly or bright stemmed dogwood (cornus), with Christmas rose (helleborus), skimmia and snowdrops* for the foreground.
Without more direct sunlight you are going to have a tough time growing anything in that area.
Herbs and vegetables need at least 6 – 8 hours of direct sunlight.
If you can take the wooden panel down to allow more light in you may have a chance, but it’s doubtful.
I really appreciate the way to think for plant growing. I prefer home gardening such we can create any type of situation for plants. It need hydroponic method which work without soil and grows healthy and high quality yields in any season. The reason behind to select hydroponic is, as people don’t get time keep watch on plants and can’t comfortable in garden to work in heavy sunlight.
You can grow plants which you want in your garden or home if your going with indoor gardening. By proper guidance from hydroponic experts and organic nutrients you’ll be able to grow your favorites plants in any weather condition.
First of all, that’s a very small area with limited or no airflow, in a hot, humid climate.
Growing anything is going to be tough.
Answer me this, does anything grow there now?
While the rosemary mentioned in the first post seems like a likely possibility, the lack of airflow is a serious concern. Maybe plant a couple of small widely spaced plants, and see if they live.
you could try ornamental peppers, also widely spaced, they tolerate a lot of shade in my area, also maybe cherry tomatoes, which I’ve grown in shade successfully. Another herb that you could try is sage, it seems to grow in the shade better than the full sun in a hot climate.
The most important thing to remember is that with limited airflow, your plants will need to be widely spaced.
