What plants and vegetables do you consider a must have for your garden?

My stepfather says I can take a portion of our backyard and turn it into a vegetable garden while growing herbs on the back porch, so I’m looking for things to plant.

Lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli. These are a few of the basic must haves that everyone grows. In the garden I used to grow I also had Yellow onions, green onions, kohlrabi, radishes, corn, sugar snap peas, zucchini. It’s all a matter of what you like to eat. I would also suggest purchasing a book on companion gardening. That will teach you how to plant things like onions with your tomatoes to avoid nematodes, or planting pumpkins under your corn to keep the raccoons out.

when you have a small garden, you want to grow high-value items, or items that will be of much better quality than what you can get at the grocery store. so i would say fresh herbs, tomatoes, peppers (if you want colorful ones, otherwise, just get them at the grocery store), lettuce, leeks, kohlrabi if you like it, maybe a zucchini & some beans, unless you can get them at farmers market. pole beans will save space. skip pumpkins, winter squash, corn unless you have a lot of space since they take so much room. You could put in a couple of cukes & trellis them up to save space.
