What is a tonic? how do you use it for herbal remedies?

Friday Sep 3, 2010

my little one has croup cough, and i’ve started to have the same symptoms. i read about this lemon and honey tonic on EHOW.com. but i dont know what a "tonic" is or how you use it once you make it. i know this may be a dumb question but can someone please tell me. And i was also wondering if anyone knows how to make oils from herbs, or can direct me to a site that can tell me? thank you.

A tonic could be many things, infusions, decoctions and tinctures have all been referred to by this name. The lemon and honey tonic is basically an infused honey, so it would be an infusion. Most herbal cough medicines are made out of decoctions (a decoction is a concentrated infusion) which are then made into simple syrups with either honey or sugar.

Recommending dosages is tricky. Neither honey or lemon is toxic, so I would suggest taking a spoon full whenever you feel the need.

The only thing that gives me pause here is the honey and the little one. Do not give raw honey to an infant under the age of one.

There are many sites on the net that will show you how to make oils from herbs. Mine is listed in the source box. Also do a search on Susun Weed, she has tons on information on how to work with herbs and even on-line classes you can take.
