What flowers and herbs would grow well in South-East Texas?
Posted by pano | Under Herb Garden Thursday Sep 2, 2010My sister and I want to plant a flower and herb garden. We are very big into all-natural remedies and essential oils and such so we decided to try growing our own flowers and herbs. We’ve never done this before so we need some tips on which would be the best to grow here (Beaumont, South-East Texas. Near the Gulf). The weather is humid and hot in the summer and it rains frequently. In the winter, the lowest temperatures are around 32°F or a little lower. We really want to plant lavender, but we know that it likes dry, hot weather conditions. French Lavender is what we really want to plant. Some other plants are rosemary, mint, parsley, black-eyed Susan, and perhaps some Texas Bluebonnet. So we need to know if these can grow here, and what conditions and care they would need. Thank you so much!
Lavender, Rosemary, Thyme and Jasmine will thrive in your area which I believe is Zone 9A along the Texas Gulf.
Many sub tropicals will also thrive as it almost never freezes. You can grow Cestrum, Brugmasia, Dombeyas and other odd fragrant plants. Check out your local nursery and let them give you some idea of the plants that will grow in your area or what they have available.
Also the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower center is in Austin Texas (http://www.wildflower.org) and while Texas is a huge state, this site may have information that you can use in regards to native plants for your area.
You might want to try this site, planting zones are shown for most of the.
