What does this quote mean to you?

Friday Aug 20, 2010

Henry David Thoreau:
However mean your life is, meet it and live it: do not shun it and call it hard names. Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Things do not change, we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

good quote.

1. However mean your life is, meet it and live it: do not shun it and call it hard names.

how terrible our life maybe,
be brave to face it,
love to live,
never blame others,
never give up your life.

2. Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage.

learn to cultivate your mind and action
our mind consists of plants; weeds or herbs (evil or kindness).
nurture the herbs and pull out the weeds

3. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends.

to crave for new things, we invite pressure

4. Things do not change, we change.

we can’t change the world,
but we can change our-self for the better

5. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

we can sell any material for material,
but never sell your kindness for evil.

Cool, I like that.
Meet your life… Embrace and fully experience everything that comes along your path, good and bad, sweet and sour.

Cultivate poverty … I am definitely going to ponder that one.

Do not trouble yourself … The pursuit of material things is vanity and fruitless, friends will find you. While I cant argue this, I am going to pursue wealth on a large scale, WHY NOT.

Change is the only constant, you can always count on that.

Sell your clothes … those are the words of an extremist and are meant to help point you in the direction of balance and stability. Sure, you could go find the green bus if you want, but like his notes pointed out, "no happiness without sharing" I think it said.

Keep your thoughts… I agree. I think the only thing we take with us when we die is how we thought and felt through life. SO FEEL GOOD.

Cheers

people take life for granted because we give a false meaning to life. just live and learn. be happy and thats all one can really do.

Live your life as all "wise" old men would?! Henry David Thoreau’s quote to me means nothing more and no less, than. Simplicity?!

"things do not change, we change"

the physical circumstances of your life are meaningless without a steady grounding in your own person. know yourself, be yourself. realize that no matter what you find in the outside world you will not be fulfilled unless you are happy within yourself. how your life is depends on how you choose to interpret it, and often possessions and other people can be a distraction causing you to lose sight of who you really are
