However, the soil in the middle has been pushed up, should I lift and overturn this to allow the seedlings underneath it to push up easier, or should I leave it and let them push through on their own? Would pushing the lifted soil down be bad for the seedlings underneath?

Hello! I’m a high school student. I’m thinking about growing my own plants indoor, just for fun. I’m really like my Science classes (especially biology) and I find that taking time out of your day to admire nature can be quite calming.

I would like to start planting a single plant indoors. I live in Toronto, Canada and we’re currently headed into summer but since my room is in the basement it’s a bit cooler than the upstairs and most of the sunlight that comes in is through small windows no taller than 30cm or about a foot if your American and maybe 50 cm wide.

I’m still sort of not sure what type of plant I should go for. Just for fun, beauty maybe some herbs or a bit of everything? I don’t mind spending too much on initial costs like seeds and a pot but I’m not to sure about fertilizing plants since I am relatively new to this (We have a small garden in our backyard but I’m not sure if we fertilize it). What would you recommend for me? I think if all goes well and I really enjoy this plant, I may choose to grow more and have like a miniature indoor garden in a some what wide container (this would most likely happen once I hit University).

Thanks a lot for the help, I do truly appreciate it.

In case you didn’t know, tomorrow is Earth Day, and today I went to do some community service at a community garden, and I must say that I feel good after doing that. I got back a bunch of seeds they didn’t want, and that felt great. I’m probably gonna plant some herbs and flowers in a pot and place it on my desk and smell it and tell them how pretty they are everyday. Sounds good? But anyways…

to the question!!!

-> What’s your favorite song about anything related to nature? (Whether it be title, lyrics, or meaning, whatever. Whatever floats your boat.)

BQ: If you could plant anything you wanted, and it would grow no matter how much you neglect it, what would you plant?

BBQ(yum): Favorite fruit or veggie?

BBBQ: What’s your favorite flower?

Enjoy! And let’s save the earth together, my amazing rock and poppers!

Right now I only have parsley, cilantro, and sweet basil. I also have some dill that I’m going to plant. I also have some chives from a few years ago ( i tend to forget its there lol ) I also want to plant some medicinal/tea herbs which I already have seeds for; chamomile, catnip, ecchinacea to name a few. On my list of culinary herbs to get I can only think of oregano and marjoram offhand. I also need plants that don’t get too large, perhas only a few feet at the most, since I have limited space. Also due to limited space, I’d prefer some herbs with many uses.

Okay, so I have NO IDEA what to do. I’ve always loved the idea of gardening and have always wondered what type of green thumb I have. So, I basically woke up today and was like, "i am going to grow vegetables this summer!" lol. So anyways, I live in Western Michigan so now since it’s may, we’re getting to the point where it doesn’t frost in the mornings any more and I think i could plant something. so what do I do?

I wanted to plant strawberries, peppers, cucumbers, carrots. Can I grow those? Please tell me, because I’m really not sure what does and does not grow in Michigan, or what type of climate certain vegetables (or fruits) need to grow in michigan? I really love fruits, I just am not sure which fruits would actually grow in michigan. Same thing with vegetables. Also, I love tea, LOVE IT! -so on a really random note, do people grow herb gardens? Can I grow my own herbs for tea? I know this is probably a lot for a beginner, but I am a very ambitious dedicated woman, and I know that if I set my mind on this I could really do something!

So, obviously my next question is what the heck do I do? What do I need to buy as far as fertilizers, soil, seeds (I will only buy seeds, that’s what I’ve decided I am going to, and can afford to start with), etc…? Do I need to designate an area? Shady, sunny? Indoor, outdoor? Do I need to build a box? How will I keep bugs away and rodents out? etc…etc….

I know it’s a lot, but Thank you so much!!
