Right now I only have parsley, cilantro, and sweet basil. I also have some dill that I’m going to plant. I also have some chives from a few years ago ( i tend to forget its there lol ) I also want to plant some medicinal/tea herbs which I already have seeds for; chamomile, catnip, ecchinacea to name a few. On my list of culinary herbs to get I can only think of oregano and marjoram offhand. I also need plants that don’t get too large, perhas only a few feet at the most, since I have limited space. Also due to limited space, I’d prefer some herbs with many uses.

I have an indoor windowsill herb garden. All the other herbs (basil, thyme, cilantro, chives) have done great. This is my second try planting parsley, and there’s nothing sprouting so far. I gave it about 3 months before I replanted it. What can I do to make sure it grows now?

Hello, I am trying my hand at herb growing. I live in growing zone 7 if that helps. I want to grow basil, mexican oregano, dill, chives, lemon tyme and parsley. Should they all be in the same pot? How deep should the pot be? How much water do I give them? etc. stuff like that. They will be outside in summer and inside in winter.

What’s easy to grow in a garden? Iknow I’m going to grow lots of tomatoes cuz I can them for things, and I want carrots and fingerling potatos and and some kind of hot pepper. I’m also going to grow ( in separate flower pots) chives, cilantro and basil, and probably some other herbs I haven’t decided on yet.

So I recently bought my first house and would love to have a vegetable garden but I’m not sure where to start. I do know a little something about growing plants but I’m not an expert on the subject by any means. I figured I would start small. A few of the things a would like to try are herbs (basil, rosemary, sage, chives, thyme) carrots, squash, beets, and maybe potatoes. So I would like to know if these things would be easy enough for a first-timer to grow? Any suggestions on other types of vegetables or herbs? Should I start by seed or buy smaller plants? Also, I live in Maine so the growing season is a little ways off but I know some things just won’t grow well here. I should also add that I have a spot that I plan on using that gets a lot of light for most of the day but for the most part my house is surrounded by trees so I have shaded areas too that I could use for shade loving plants. Oh and I would love to grow everything naturally/organically so if anyone has any tips on books or websites on organic farming that would be great too!
Thanks!
I am planning on starting a compost as soon as we don’t have snow on the ground so I can start collect leaves and such. I’ve read quite a bit about the process but what do you do in the winter? That may sound like a silly question but can you keep adding things even if its freezing out? I would like to stop throwing away all my "green" kitchen scraps since it seems like such a waste. Also I have heard of the dish soap spray to keep bugs away. My mom is a very good gardener so I do know a trick or two. I’ve just never done it on my own.
