Is POTTING soil and GARDEN soil the same?
Posted by pano | Under Herb Garden Thursday Sep 9, 2010i am going to probably pot most of my herbs and tomatoes, jalapenos and i bought a big bag of GARDEN soil then i wondered if maybe i should have bought the bag called POTTING soil instead or are they pretty much the same.
I mix my own soil. From what I have seen garden soil is heavier then potting soil. Were I were you, what I would do is mix the garden soil with an equal part of peat and vermiculite and / or perlite. Both are available at garden centers. The garden soil, if it is like the garden soil I have seen sold, is way too heavy to use in containers. Afterwards I would fertilize with only organic fertilizers as chemical fertilizers tend to build up salts very quickly in containers. Good luck.
no, the names are self-explanatory. potting soil is used primarily for potted plants, while garden soil is used if you’re planting something the ground. the nutrients/soil type are different for each, but they’re roughly the same.
Potting soil is used to grow plants, herbs and vegetables in contained garden environments, (pots and other types of containers.) Gardening soils are used as additives to your regular soil.
