Garden soil is generally used outdoors, especially as a soils amendment and per the manufacturer is not recommended for indoor pots. Potting soil is recommended for pots that are used indoors. Tomatoes are usually planted directly in the ground in regular soil and your Topsy Turvey most likely (or should be) outdoors in the most direct sunlight. Therefore your mixture is perfectly fine.

The test is if it drains or not, plain and simple. Some garden soils may not drain as well as potting soils and cause root rot issues. Is it retaining all the water that you've given it or has a descent amount drained out as it should. If it's heavy and soggy I would change it out now.

I'm a beginner gardener and i used top soil! It's worked so far. I wouldn't mess with the roots though, just let it be and i think you'll be okay.
