I used garden soil instead of potting soil. Should I re-plant?

Saturday May 29, 2010

I accidently used Miracle Grow garden soil when planting my Topsy Turvey tomato/herb planter. I realized after about 1/2 of the way through and then used Miracle Grow potting soil for the remainder. I just did this a few hours ago. Should I try to pull the garden soil out and risk damaging the tomatoes’ roots or just leave it as is?

Garden soil is generally used outdoors, especially as a soils amendment and per the manufacturer is not recommended for indoor pots. Potting soil is recommended for pots that are used indoors. Tomatoes are usually planted directly in the ground in regular soil and your Topsy Turvey most likely (or should be) outdoors in the most direct sunlight. Therefore your mixture is perfectly fine.

it should be fine and it wont hurt to use garden soil. dirt is dirt and if the plant doesnt wilt or dry up at all dont worry about it.

The test is if it drains or not, plain and simple. Some garden soils may not drain as well as potting soils and cause root rot issues. Is it retaining all the water that you’ve given it or has a descent amount drained out as it should. If it’s heavy and soggy I would change it out now.

I’m a beginner gardener and i used top soil! It’s worked so far. I wouldn’t mess with the roots though, just let it be and i think you’ll be okay.
