Gardeners! I dug out all the dirt today, plan on loosening the dirt tomorrow, and I hope to get started…?

Wednesday Aug 18, 2010

I’m starting small. It’s a rectangle approximatly 6 by 12 (ish). I plan on ruffing up the dirt tomorrow and mixing in some soil I purchased. I mostly want to plant vegatables. So far we picked out watermelon, pumpkins, peas, cucumbers, and a few herbs. I plan to purchase tomato plants to put in too.

Anything I should be aware of? Any of these plants to challenging for a beginner gardener? Any other veggies you can think of that are easy or fun to grow. I have a 5 year old who is helping me with this garden project.

Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
Sorry…..we live in Georgia.

yep they all are right–garden need plenty of sun shine–radish and carrots go together in the same row–radishes are ready in bout 30 days carrots bout 60 days–tommy toe tomatos are good to plant for 5 year old–eat em right in the garden,,bout the size of a grape– 45 days to get ripe—you can get miniature water melon and cuke plants that do not require a lot of room ,bush type–, sweet banana pepper is good thing to plant also–eat them with tomato s ,– be sure to fertilize the area first and dig it in to mix it with the soil, broadcast bout 5 pounds 8–8–8 to start with, then side dress plants bout 3 weeks later,or when the plants are bout 6 to 8 " tall , do not get fertilizer on the leaves, it will burn them,

you don’t mention your location, etc. talk to someone at the local nursery for questions specific to your area.

Just be careful where you put what. Watermelons and pumkins lie on the ground and have big vine/leaf structures, so give them lots of room. Peas and cucumbers, and most tomatoes need a trellis or something similar for support. If the trellis blocks the sun from the watermelon/cuke plants it will slow them down. The previous poster is right, check with a local garden place, they will know your local conditions. You made good choices though, all the activity takes place outside the ground which is more interesting for a child than root crops.

Sunflowers are fun for children. They grow fast, are pretty and you can eat the seeds in the end.
